Carl Macek

Jerry Beck has just posted on his blog on Cartoon Brew that his friend Carl Macek has died of a heart attack on Saturday.

Jerry posted:  ”Mutual friend Bob Cabeen has just informed me of the passing of my former business partner Carl Macek. Carl died of a heart attack on Saturday.

Among his many accomplishments Carl created Robotech, co-founded Spumco with John K. and co-founded Streamline Pictures (Akira, Fist of the North Star, Laputa, etc.) with me.

Although Carl had his critics, his work on Robotech proved to be a major influence in the popularity of anime in North America.  He will be missed.

I’m so happy to have met Carl. I’ll never forget the stories he told us at dinner during Animation on Display and, getting somewhat lost trying to find a Subway restaurant with him was priceless. It’s so surreal that he’s gone. I’m having a hard time grasping that this amazingly pleasant that I was having dinner with three months ago is someone who I will never see again. My prayers go out to his family.
