Hey everyone! I just finished up another anime series that hasn’t been released in America yet. This time it was a little known gem called “Seitokai no Ichizon” which basically means “The Student Council of Your Choosing.” So this series follows the student council activites of 5 students. 4 are girls, 1 is a boy. In their school, student council is voted on by popularity. That’s how the 4 girls got there. But the 5th spot is reserved for whoever has the highest grades. So the boy, Ken, has studied his ass off in hopes of having his dream “harem.” Now seriously, nothing really happens in this show.  And the show almost entirely takes place inside the one student council room. However, this show makes A LOT of fun of itself and often says things like, “Wow, no one is going to watch this show because we never leave the room.” But within each episode, you learn a little bit more about each girl (and boy).

I wish my student council was this awesome.

The 4 girls in this show all fit a certain type of anime girl: There’s the super cute, looks like a 9 year old student council president. There’s the silent but extremely deadly girl with long black hair that can definitely kill you. There’s the tough sports-playing girl. And there’s the suuuuuuper sweet, innocent girl who’s a bit dumb…but she’s a KILLER video game player. This show sets out to make fun of all other anime genres. In fact, within the first 2 minutes of episode 1, they make fun of “Dragonball” and “Haruhi Suzumiya.”  I tried to catch all the references myself, but they just come and go so quickly! Here’s a very small list of the ones I caught: Dragonball, Lucky Star, K-On, Haruhi, Full Metal Alchemist, Resident Evil, Terminator, Metal Gear Solid, Gurren Laagan, Fate/Stay Night, Yu Gi Oh, Castlevania, Death Note, and Dragon Quest. You gotta be paying attention to this one to get all the jokes.  And as I am not a very big “Haruhi” fan, I thought the references to that in particular were the most enjoyable.

Some highlights I thought were awesome: Stay tuned for the BEST “Death Note” reference in episode 9. I laughed for a good solid 7 minutes on that one. And in Episode 4 this show manages to make fun of EVERY yaoi, supernatural, fighting anime, dominatrix anime, harem anime in existence. There’s some “Nuku Nuku Dash” thrown in for some good measure…hell, they even make fun of their OWN theme song. And in most episodes, they find an extremely humorous way to get these girls into bikinis considering they never leave the room. It may sound silly, but they are just so damn clever in doing it you can’t help but applaud the writers.

Personally, I haven’t laughed this much at an anime in a LOOOOOONG time. I really have nothing bad to say about it. Those who are big fans of mecha or fighting animes may be slightly bored with it all taking place in only one room, but the series is only 12 episodes. Plenty short enough to stick around and finish it out. And I think you will definitely grow to love these characters (the blonde gamer in particular). Let me know what you think if you’ve already seen “Seitokain No Ichizon” and stay tuned her on the blog for more un-licensed anime reviews.

Sounds funny. I love to hear about what’s coming out over there. I would be interesting to hear about some of the titles that have alot of “buzz” around them that haven’t been licensed in the US yet and see how they do when they come over here. I love your reviews, but I know that you’re coming home soon so it would be cool to see and hear about some more “adventures” of your own as well!
