Can an Italian animated series capture the attention of young anime fans with anime-style series and trading card game? And what do Kaji Tang and Kyle Hebert have in common? Hint: It has to do with Street Fighter and it isn’t pretty.

Does anyone else think that the guy with the goatee looks like Harry Dresden? If you don’t know who that is read The Dresden Files. If you like fantasy, detective stories, noir, or comedy you’ll like these novels.

Artwork is always evolving as well as storyline. Just because something like Huntik was really, really, really poorly done does not mean other Western animation is not worthy of being call works of art: Last Airbender or anything made by Disney. I would not ever call those “anime” because they lack one of the key parts to what makes up “Anime”.

    Anime
    1) Japanese – some sort of Japanese Culture Influence
    2) Japan made
    3) GREAT art, story, character, and can reach people of all ages, nearly timeless (optional – face it there are some really bad anime out there).

Other animations are NOT Anime even if they are Works of Art. Give the Artist the Credit and SHOW respect to the other nations by saying “That is (nation) animation”. There are many great artists and stories that are Chinese and that are Korean. Moreover, they are very nationalistic there just like in USA, we don’t want our Disney Masterpieces to be said they are Canadian or Mexican Art.

So give credit to the artist and the nation it came from. Just like when you call Anime “ANIME” it is a direct and sole linkage to JAPAN.

Here’s how I see Anime using an alcohol analogy. Here brandy=animation in general and Cognac=Japanese animation (Anime). Got it? Ok so… both Cognac and brandy are made by distilling wine. However, Cognac is by definition made in Cognac, France using specific grapes and methods yielding a particular flavor. Brandy can be made anywhere with various different grapes and methods yielding a variety of flavors. However, one could use the same grapes and methods as Cognac and make it in Nova Scotia. The end product of this may taste and look like Cognac and could be called Cognac-like brandy but is not Cognac. The quality of both Cognac and brandy varies. The grapes and methods give you the flavor but the individual making it determines the quality. If you’re still reading, I know it’s not perfect but you get the idea. PS- Nick is super sexy.

To the producers- More Bailey does Japan; Nick & Miley 24/7; Less talky talky from Roy; Budget for Laura’s hair & wardrobe; New girl seems cool; Like longer episode; Keep up the good work.

I tend to think of Anime as Japanese originated. Miley was talking about outsourcing, but if you think of the nation of first Exhibition or Broadcast as the nation of origin, that eliminates the debate over production.

Also, I find it interesting how half the comments so far have complained about “Huntik” not being anime… Did they actually watch the show?

@EnigmaticBard: Did they watch the show?

Yes, I have watched, and Yes I know Roy has watched it too. It to me CLEARLY not ANIME.

@Mike: Just because someone talks very well does not mean they should talk less, instead it means you should listen and learn. Nor, is it nice to make jokes on a person’s taste in clothes. I’m sure you don’t have a very good fashion sense to begin with. I think Laura’s fashion really reflected many people’s fashion sense that are among the Anime Culture. I would even say, it was very toned down for what I am accustomed to seeing. After all, it is all about self expression.

Oh, and Jonathan…COME ON!!! It’s shows like “Desert Punk” that make people look at me like I’m a total perv when I say I like anime. Maybe if there were less shows like that and more shows like “Last Exile,” anime would actually stop being looked down upon in the mainstream.

(I think that segment might have been in the last episode, but I was a bit behind.)

My opinion follows along the lines of anime as animation that was originally written/aired in Japan, with japanese as the original language. It has a style and content that american/western animation seems to lack.

I’m no real fan of dubbing what with the name changes/americanizing, and at times the unnecessary editing it brings (oh no its an epic battle and the lights shattered, we can have that) … changing the sex of a character even. I’m no fan of 4kids either; them and their invisible guns, I mean come on!

In regards to EnigmaticBard’s comment regarding complaining about Huntik: no I don’t think it is anime and no I didn’t watch it any more than what they showed in this ep of Anime TV: the style of animation/character design gave it away not to mention the feedback already given on the show.

But hey these are just my opinions, I have friends who are fans of anime and consider Avatar TLA to be anime *shrugs* seems to be one of those words where the definition is blurred/varying from person to person and I don’t see one over ruling definition coming anytime soon XD

Kuni, Dreamer, I meant this episode of ATV, not Huntik. I find it interesting how everyone was complaining about it not being anime when that was the ENTIRE POINT OF THE EPISODE!!! They chose a Western animation as to discuss the differences from anime. It’s completely illogical to complain about the show not being anime when all they talked about in this episode was that the show wasn’t anime.

And going with that, this is one of the best episodes they’ve ever had, and it was BECAUSE they chose a western animation. The discussion that came out of that choice over the qualities of anime and Western animation was fantastic, so the next time you complain about something, make sure your complaint isn’t just a reiteration of WHAT THE EPISODE WAS ABOUT.

I must have misheard something when I was watching this ep (the first I have ever seen as I only discovered this show the other day XD) as I thought they invited us to come on here and give our opinion of what we believe makes anime anime/what shows we consider anime and thus continue the discussion they had on the show *shruggs*

the huntik part was simply because you asked if anyone had watched it, I haven’t – anymore than they showed – as it didn’t look like something I could enjoy watching.

I loved the discussion here. I did not love the choice of series that was reviewed. The bit on what is an anime was really cool, though. I thoroughly enjoyed that segment. I also liked how the discussion was moderated. A lot of the time it went off topic and into something completely random. That’s fine for an hour long podcast, but you guys have a limited amount of time. I don’t like it when the direction of the conversation gets way too far away from where it needs to be on your shows. It’s fun when you take it a little off-topic to make jokes. I cringe when you take a left turn and hit a tree.

    Great job! Love the Show!

I guess, it has already been established as far as the meaning and origin of the term anime. So it’s really no point in reiterating the definition. So I’ll try a different approach.

To me, I think nowadays, the term “anime” should be used as an abbreviation of the word animated instead of a reference to cartoons from Japan.

Since animation has come so far since when we were first exposed to it, maybe we should put more emphasis on the country of origin (e.g. American Anime, British Anime, Japanese Anime).

Also, going by the current definition, where does a show like Transformers stand? It was a U.S. show that was animated by a Japanese company. When it was cancel after Season 3, it continued over there.

So, is it an anime? A cartoon? Or an cartoon turned anime?

I think I’ve come to the conclusion from this discussion that the question, “What is anime?” is incredibly hard to answer. Therefore, I pose an easier question. “What is life?”

i think how people are introduced to anime is how people react to hearing you are a fan. if the first comic movie people saw was the Ang Lee “Hulk” movie, i’m pretty sure they would toss up their hands and run away screaming as if on fire. sadly i think the most recent type. i’m sure everyone in Hollywood as seen the “Break the Ice” video by Brittany Spears and if that’s the first time they’ve seen that clearly Japanese style they might think it’s all about thigh highs, ample bosoms, and butt-kicking. so i feel for you EnigmaticBard, have them all sit down and movie night with you featuring Metropolis. It’s free on demand on Starz in my area right now.

Sorry EnigmaticBard, I have been away in the middle of traveling the world to catch up on the discussion of this tread.

From what I can see and tell. You attacked the general public to claim that we are COMPLAINING about our opinion of anime and what is NOT anime. The point of the show as you so clear pointed out like Mr. Ovious, is to say what they the cast of AnimeTV felt about Hutik and how it differs from anime. Again, the cast asked us to give our own opinions about what is anime and what is not.

I could have gone in great detail about many NON-Anime that are continually mistaken as ANIME. The fact that they choose Hutik was to make it easy to see a difference, while still having artistic simiularities which people often mistake as being the core of anime art.

I am sorry if you are wanting to dance on other people’s comments without watching in detail the show request. But Please try a little harder to keep up.

On the other hand, if you would like to continue a debate between what is ANIME and what is NOT ANIME.. the simiularies and differences in modern shows… I will be around more often, now that i am settling down at my new job.

Personally I have seen huntik on the cw 4kids and it’s clearly not anime! I’ve been watching anime since I was 7 and the first was Inuyasha. And it got me hooked. To me anime gives off this vibe saying that it is anime, ie Avatar the last airbender. Kick ass anime even if it wasn’t made in Japan! To me it gave off this vibe of being a pure anime. I even Checked on some hardcore anime websites, that purely have only subbed anime. To them and to me it’s known as an anime. But Huntik didn’t give off that vibe to me at all, it gave this Italian vibe like the wind club. Everytime I saw this show I got so pissed off because it was so stupid, and I didn’t even seen all of it! It really pissed me off to see this and think that this maybe considered an anime! NO!!!!!!! All I have to say is what gives off an anime vibe is an anime. Plain and simple!
